Immunizations

Peconic providers feel strongly that vaccines are a very important part of preventive medicine in children. We follow the vaccine guidelines and schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.   If you do not plan on vaccinating your child according to the AAP/CDC schedule, our philosophy and yours are so different that we recommend you find a practice that is more compatible with your beliefs.

We recommend that pregnant moms get the Tdap (Pertussis) vaccine against whooping cough in the third trimester.  If that did not happen, ask the hospital nurse about getting Tdap shot for mom before leaving the hospital.  All parents, caregivers and regular visitors should get vaccinated against pertussis so the baby is not exposed to whooping cough. The baby will start pertussis immunization at 2 months but is still susceptible until the primary series is completed with shots at 4mo and 6mo.

All family members should also get flu vaccines.  Babies can’t get flu shots until 6 months of age yet are very vulnerable to serious flu complications.

It is recommended that newborns get the Hep B vaccine in the hospital.
